4 Reasons Why Job Roles Must Be Clearly Defined

Many people go to work every day without a clear idea what their job entails. Some on the other hand have the wrong description of their role within their company. As a manager or executive, be sure to clearly define your employees’ job descriptions and the roles that they must fill within it. Here are four important reasons why job roles must be clearly defined.

1. Efficiency. Without proper job descriptions, you may find several of your employees conducting the same or similar duties. You do not want to waste your time and your employees’ time (and money). To optimize efficiency within your business, your employees require clear job roles in order to not step on each other’s proverbial toes.

2. Clarity. If your employees are indeed conducting similar or the same duties every day and you inform them of this, they may well become disgruntled and bothered by the working conditions. They may also place the blame on your shoulders, creating further animosity and a lack of faith in your abilities as a supervisor and as an authority figure. This should be avoided at all costs.

3. Maintain a unity between your employee’s job description and roles with their job titles. A low level employee may feel taken advantage of if they are performing duties that they did not expect with their position. Similarly, if a mid-level employee is expected to perform duties below what is expected from such a position, they may well feel underappreciated, becoming dissatisfied with their work environment.

4. Avoid customer confusion, especially in the sales department. If your salespeople are unaware of their duties and roles, the customers themselves may become confused, which will force a loss of faith in your company. Avoid confusion both within the business, and confusion for those you wish your company to work with and profit from.
